While GPS is the component we always think about, modern smartphones can use triangulation of cell towers, and of wifi hotspots, in addition to GPS satellite triangulation — all in an effort to more precisely identify the device location.
Of the three available components of location (GPS, cell tower, and hotspot triangulation), GPS is the only one available “offline”, when the phone or tablet has no connection to cell networks or the internet.
Magpi enables that precise device location — in the form of latitude, longitude, and GPS accuracy metric — to easily be added as an additional data point in a data set created by answering the questions that make up a data collection form. Most commonly, Magpi adds that location data behind the scenes, so the data collector can focus on the other content: the form invisibly records location at the start of an interview and records it, along with date and time.
