Magpi has been proven to provide rapid and inexpensive SMS surveillance for disease epidemics, including Ebola, in resource-challenged settings. Shouldn’t we be setting up SMS surveillance for coronavirus now?
In 2017, Kenya’s presidential election result was disputed by the opposition. Unlike previous elections, Kenya’s Elections Observations Group (ELOG), consisting of civil society and faith-based organizations, had equipped about a third of its 5,700 observers with the ability to report election results by SMS.
To assist with a large monitoring activity, a web-based SMS was used to send messages to mobile telephones of all contacts identified as having high-risk exposure to AI. The purpose of the SMS was to remind identified contacts to self-monitor for influenza-like symptoms.
